How Does Shakespeare Present Aspects of Folly in Twelfth Night?

All or most of Shakespeare's plays contain playfulness and foolishness and within ‘Twelfth Night' there are many examples of this. All these examples of folly add to the overall humour of the play. Throughout ‘Twelfth Night' the theme of foolishness links the plot, characters and scenes in the play. In Shakespeare's day, people wanted to go to the theatre and be able to laugh. They loved all plays with an element of comedy, even Shakepeare's tragedies have elements of comedy in them. In Romeo and Juliet there are characters seen as crazy or foolish such as Mercutio. First of all there's Malvolio, one of the main characters. Proud and pompous, he is easily ridiculed as he is lead into dreadful humiliation at the hands of Fabian, Maria, Sir Toby, Feste and Sir Andrew. All the formentioned people make Malvolio look foolish when Maria writes a letter to Malvolio expressing her love for him and signing it from Olivia. Malvolio falls into the trap and begins to believe that Olivia is madly in love with him. The letter says: ‘Remember who commanded thy yellow stockings and wished to see thee ever cross gartered.' This causes Malvolio to dress in yellow stockings and cross garters to impress and try to woo his lady. On stage this is a very amusing scene to watch as Malvolio comes on wearing this ridiculous outfit — very memorable. The letter also says: ‘If thou entertain'st my love, let it appear in thy smiling thy smiles become thee well. Therefore in my presence still smile, dear my sweet I prithee.' This causes Malvolio to keep a smile on his face constantly. Not only has Malvolio a rather unattractive smile but since Olivia's brother had recently died, Olivia wants everyone to act mournful around her. She insists on wearing black with a veil over her face. When Malvolio appears with yellow clothing and a huge smile on his face he inevitably looks foolish. Olivia supposes that Malvolio is mad, subject to the heat affecting the brain – ‘Midsummer Madness.' Malvolio would not have looked so foolish if he had not had certain qualities. His over sensitive nature, pretentiousness, self-centred character and self importance make it simple for the servants and the others involved in the trick to take advantage of these faults and cut Malvolio down to size. The difference in class between Olivia and Malvolio also adds to the humour and the foolery because in Shakepeare's day there would be no possibility of any sort of romance between Malvolio and Olivia, Malvolio being a mere steward and Olivia being a wealthy countess, the status contrast is simply too immense. When Malvolio reads the letter, Malvolio begins to fall in love with the idea of being in love . Another character within Twelfth Night who adds to the theme of foolishness is obviously the fool – a professional jester. Feste has a very important role. He is constantly acting foolishly as his job is to solace and entertain his fellowmates. Although he acts like a clown through most of the play, he is probably one of the most sensible and wise characters in the play. In Act 3, Viola says: ‘This fellow is wise enough to play the fool and to do that well, craves a kind of wit.' This is an accurate depiction on Feste. He often outsmarts the other characters in the play using his quickwits most of all Malvolio and Olivia. Many other characters are the ‘real fools' such as Sir Toby Belch — an ironic surname due to his tendency to drink heavily, Sebastian for marrying Olivia when he barely knew her. Overall, Viola is quite sensible. Although dressed like a man, in those days there would be no way that she would be able to obtain service with Orsino as a woman, so her disguise was quite an ingenious idea. When talking to higher status characters, especially Olivia, Feste almost reverses the roles talking down to Olivia as shown in a conversation on page 17. Other characters cannot talk to Olivia in the same way as Feste, as everyone must look up to her and respect her. Olivia tells Malvolio to ‘Take the fool away' and Feste answers ‘Do you not hear fellows? Take away the lady.' Feste also often mocks Olivia as he is the only character who can do so. The first example of this is Feste telling Olivia she is being foolish, her brother has died and she is in mourning this is the first mention of foolishness in the play: Feste: Good Madonna, why mourn'st thou? Olivia: Good Fool, for my brother's death Feste: I think his soul is in hell, Madonna. Olivia: I know his soul is in heaven, fool Feste: The more fool, Madonna, to mourn for your brother's soul, being in heaven. There are many other times during the play when aspects of folly come into the characters' speeches. Feste in Act 1 says: ‘Better a witty fool than a foolish wit.' There are many other examples of role swapping and disguises that also add to the humour of the play. It also makes characters look foolish and humiliates them. The prime example of role swapping is Viola dressing as a man and changing her identity to become a man called Caesario. This causes much confusion leading to characters being foiled and being made to look foolish. Not only did everyone believe that Viola was in fact a man but Olivia actually falls in love with her and not surprisingly feels humiliated and foolish when she discovers that Caesario is actually a woman. Olivia does look foolish although no-one can mock her due to her high status and most people look up to her with respect. The language used in the play is not strictly foolish although many of the names are ‘fooled with' as Viola, Olivia and Malvolio, the main characters, all have names containing the same letters (v,o,l,a and i). Malvolio means ‘ill wishing' very fitting to his character. There are other character's names which are amusing such as Sir Toby Belch – ironic as he is a heavy drinker. Aguecheek is a ridiculous name†¦. And Orsino is named so because Don Virgino Orsino – an Italian Nobleman was the guest of honour at the opening night of Twelfth Night so Shakespeare named the Duke in his play after him. Twelfth Night was once a day of great merrymaking to mark the end of the Christmas festivities. It was the feast of fools and even now, the Christmas season is a time where we all seek entertainment in the form of amusement and folly. Although written all those years ago, Twelfth Night is still relevant today. A twentieth century audience still enjoy this play today as people still love to laugh and have a good time some of the jokes, although obscure are still found amusing today. Ten Point Agenda in Basic Education Essay 1. 12-year Basic Education Cycle (K+12) Our President is planning to expand the basic education cycle, from a 10-year cycle to a globally-comparable 12 years, for our public school children. At present, we are the only country in Asia that has a 10-year cycle for basic education. Those who can afford basic education get into the best universities and the best jobs after graduation. 2. Universal preschooling for all All public school children will have preschool as their introduction to formal schooling by 2016, and he will make this available to all children regardless of income. With regards to pre-schooling, I think this program was implemented already by previous administration. We had already our Day Care Centers managed by Day Care Worker. This program is under the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) with the Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) as the head of the Day Care Workers. 3. Madaris education (Madrasah) as a sub-system within the education system President Noynoy Aquino wants full basic education for all Muslim Filipino children. According to him, this is to give proper respect to their culture while providing a sound curriculum in English, Filipino, Science, and Math. Madaris education, with subjects in Arabic language and Islamic Values Education, can be integrated in our public school curriculum as additional subjects. 4. Technical vocational education as an alternative stream in senior high school. He will reintroduce technical-vocational education in our public high schools to better link schooling to local industry needs and employment. We need to provide an educational alternative to better prepare the students for the world of work. 5. â€Å"Every child a reader† by Grade 1 By the end of the next administration, every child must be a reader by Grade 1. At the core of our children’s non-learning problems is the inability to read properly. By the end of the next administration (SY 2015-16), every child passing pre-school must be a reader by Grade 1. I think this is the responsibility of the parents to teach their children how to read while at home. Modesty aside, our parents taught us how to read when we were still young even if they were just both an elementary graduate. 6. Science and Math proficiency Our President is also planning to rebuild the science and math infrastructure in schools so that we can produce more scientists, engineers, technicians, technologists and teachers in our universities so that this country can be more globally compatible in industry and manufacturing. To build a culture for science and math, he is also planning to promote science and math clubs and fairs. In our school, we have Student Technologist and Entrepreneur of the Philippines (STEP) Competition and Mathematics Week Celbration. 7. Assistance to private schools as essential partners in basic education The President is planning to expand government assistance to private education. A strong private school system will strengthen our public schools by providing parents an alternative and not adding to the overcrowding. One concrete example is the Fund for Assistance to Private Education (FAPE). They have this program Educational Service Contract (ESC). A student in a private school can apply as ESC Scholar provided that he or she is deserving to become a scholar. In other words, his/her academic records are good. I think, no grade below 80% is one of their requirements. Modesty aside, I was once an ESC scholar before when I was still in high school (ehem!). By the way, another requirement is the Income Tax Return (ITR) of the parents. 8. Medium of instruction rationalized President Aquino wanted the Philippines to become a trilingual nation: Learn English well and connect to the world. Learn Filipino well and connect to our country. He said: â€Å"Retain your dialect and connect with your heritage.† I think this will be realized. 9. Quality textbooks Our President also will not tolerate poor textbook quality in our schools. Textbooks will be judged by three criteria: quality, better quality, and more quality. Poor quality textbooks have no place in our schools according to him. I have noticed that some of our textbooks have wrong information. There was a time that I read a book and it says: â€Å"Clouds are blue.† Where in this world that you can find clouds with blue color? There are also some words that are misspelled. This will be the job of the National Book Review Board. They must see to it that all books have three criteria: quality, better quality, and more quality. 10. Covenant with the local governments to build more schools President Noynoy Aquino is planning to build more schools in areas where there are no public or private schools in partnership with local governments, as well address our persistent classroom and teacher shortages. We need more schools with smaller populations so that teachers, students and parents can form a real learning community. This time, there is now a Local School Board (LSB) with the District Supervisor as the Chairman and the Municipal Mayor as the Co-Chairman or vice versa. This quote by Tom Tykwer (Composer), epitomizes how he is trying to explore the range of possibilities in film. Also making it distinctive to draw in the audience by having open ended possibilities in film. The movie Run lola run directed by Tom Tykwer and the red tree written by shaun tan, both establish two core ideas which are chance and time. The use of a variety of techniques create distinctively visual images that are highly distinctive. Chance is an idea which is clearly portrayed in both texts. In the movie, Run lola run, the director uses flash forwards to empitomize this idea of chance. The audience witnesses the lives change for the people that lola bumbs into on her journeys, and how their lives change each time to how lols life changes. This is seen with the lady with the pram that lola encounters each time as she beggings her run. This symbolises the unpredictability of life. Lolas destiny in each three stories, so do the lives of the people that she sees. The use of the fast non-digetic sound of the clicking of the camera, allows the audience to feel a sense of urgency. This reflects the idea of fate, that our choices, circumstnces and actions are all connected with those whom we encounter in life. The audience gains a sense of knowledge and is made aware that their life is unpredictable and their actions affect others. Furthermore, the use of characterisation is evident in the main character Lola. The idea of using a female as the protagonist of the film is what makes this post-modern film so distinctive to all the other films in todays society. As a result, lola feels at time, that she isnt in control of her destiny and uses her loud, high-pitched scream to change that. The reoccurring digetic sound of lolas scream is mainly evident in the casino scene, where there is a close-up on Lolas face as she screams to control her destiny with the ball to land on the number 20, as she plays the ultimate game of chance. The audience is made to feel anxious as the wait to see the result of her scream. Hence the idea of chance is also presented in the picture book, The red tree. The metaphore the world is a deaf machine, is used in conjuction with the dull colours used to portray that the persona, the little girl, feels unheard and fears that her destiny will be to end up alone and not belong in society. The reader is automatically drawn to empathise with the persona as how a little girl can be unheard and be left all alone. Thus, the use of composiotion layout is used in the middle of the picture book. Where the vector image is a game board which symbolises chance and many paths, also it is evident that the girl in the corner of the page is holding a dice, this dice represents the idea of fate. This illustrates to the reader that the persona believes that her life is a game and also she is unsure of the future. All the above techniques used in both the film Run lola run and the picture book the red tree influence the idea of chance and the use of visual techniques are what makes these texts both so distinctively visual. Time is an important idea in both texts which is constantly reoccurring. At the beginning of the movie run lola run, the opening credits, an animated lola is seen running towards a clock as the sound effects of tick tocking sounds. Allow the audience to be aware of the importance of time in this film. Hence, the close upshot of the pendukm grand-father clock in the opening credits, helps aid the importance of time. The reaccuring motif of clocks and the number 20, 20 minutes to save mani, generates drama and exicitment, also reminding the audience of lolas race against time. Furthermore, the audience is with lola in her journey for the real time of 20 minutes. This gives the audience the knowledge of what lola actually completes in 20 minutes. This technique is what makes this post-modern film so distinctively visual. Furthermore, the use of split screen image is constantly reaccuring in the tri-part structure of the film. This is shown in the multiple scences between mani, lola and the town clock, as lola competes against time to get to mani and save him. This is used to engange the audience and make them wonder what is going to happen next and allow them to wonder if she will make it in time. Simliarily the idea of time is present in the picture book, the red tree with the reoccurring motif of the red leaf. The persona at the start of the novel doesnt pay attention to it, however towards the end of the book she notices it and it is evident that a smile begins to form on her face. This is used to symbolise to the reader that it takes time for a good outcome to occur also that in ones life timing is everything. Furthermore the repition of and wait.. symbolises that the persona is just waiting for something to happen. This makes the reader feel sympathetic to the little girl. This visual technique is used to make both texts so distinctively visual. Also the different events in each of the characters life, helps shape the texts to be unique. In conclusion, the movie run lola run and the picture book the red tree the use of many visual and aural techniques has created texts that are portrayed to be distinctively visual.
